Golf Renovation: Myth #1

Myth #1:
We are going to re-build all of the greens.

Truth:  Greens are not being rebuilt but they need to be saved. We’ll only disrupt the perimeter of the green which is approximately 20% of each surface while keeping the internal rolls you love today. It is normal for greens to evolve as they age. Weather, play and maintenance practices lead to the greens shrinking as sand dams form around the edge. Sand builds from bunker play, wind and consistent topdressing to keep greens smooth. Chip shots become unpredictable playing around these slopes. Dams also prevent proper drainage which compromises turf.

By removing dams, greens will be expanded to allow greater shot variety, pin locations and enjoyment of the course. The greens are the greatest defense of the property.

#2 Green changed almost twenty years ago to allow for the expansion of Quincy Ave. Space and elevation were the limiting factors to the current design of that green. This is the only putting surface planned to be rebuilt completely, since it does not mirror the remaining greens. Waterway work needs to be completed prior to golf construction. See photo for the old version of #2 Maxwell.
