First Mow

We began mowing greens today for the 2023 season. We brush them first to cleanup the surface from any debris and to help stand the plant up. We follow with a mow as the plants are starting to green up for the spring.

Most of the grass we mow is frayed tips from last fall's growth and a little growth from this spring.

Soil temperatures and moisture make the biggest impact on growth in the spring. We will mow two times per week until aerification. Once we open up the surfaces, the soil temperatures can really begin to warm and growth continues.

Of course it's up to Mother Nature on when we will be mowing and grooming consistently. Usually by mid-May we start to hit a routine.

The irrigation system is also up and running. Monday we filled the mainline and began turning on laterals, such as fairways, tee and greens on Tuesday.

A couple of spray applications are coming up this week. The first is a fungicide used to battle the Fairy Ring fungus in greens that develops in the spring and summer. We water this product into the soil to take action. The second application is for seed head suppression on our poa annua in our greens. This application contributes to the smoothness in the greens and really assists on making them great.
