Master Plan Revisited

Recently the Green Committee requested to refresh pricing for the Master Plan work on the golf courses. The main focus are green surrounds, all bunkers and cart paths.

This week we had architect Jim Urbina out to review the project. He painted out areas of disturbance for the bunkers and the expanded areas around greens.

Over time golf courses age and change for various reasons such as maintenance habits, weather, agronomic and golfer demands.

Not everything is required to be done with every master plan. However, since the plan was completed, we have tackled a few items on the list. Tree care has been one area that we have continued to address. This not only helps the turf but it opens up playing corridors for more variety of shots.

Expanded fairways and approaches have been a nice addition to the property over the last several years. This allows for more ball roll around the green and give the option for the lesser player to have a putter in their hands. And who doesn't like hitting a fairway? This is not done to make the golf course easier, this is to provide more variety for players who enjoy this beautiful property every day.

Where we are limited from tackling in-house at this point are bunkers and immediate green expansions. Temporary closing and excavator work is required to make these changes.

The bunkers are in major need of replacement. They are over 20 years old now. The sand is contaminated with the native soil. Drains in the bunker are clogged and they do not drain properly. They have fallen out of shape due to weather, play and maintenance. These are all common elements of the life cycle of a bunker.

It is time to correct these traps and our plan to renovate will help reduce the amount of major renovation moving forward.

The white lines around the bunkers are NOT the size of the new bunker. They are the limits of disturbance. This is where the contractor cuts sod and the new bunker is shaped within these limits. The contractor will use these lines to take measurements so they can price accordingly. During construction, creating enough work space allows the shaper to blend in with the existing grades around the bunker.

There is no time table or start date determined yet. The Green Committee and the Board of Directors are refreshing pricing on the project to determine the size of the project. Any type of closure time has yet to be determined, however this has been discussed.
