Winter Repair

This week we began seeding all ice damage areas on the golf courses. There are a number of steps to achieve successful repair.

First, we use our slit seeder to incorporate perennial ryegrass. The slits open the surface and allow the seed to come in contact with the soil. This is very important. All seed must have proper seed to soil contact to begin germination. The seed also needs to stay moist and no better time for the soil to stay moist longer.

During these dry spring days we can turn on some sprinklers to wet them down, but the cooler nights allow the soil to stay wetter longer. Also, we need temperature. This will come in time. This week has been great for seed, unfortunately next week looks to be the return of winter. Getting seed into the ground now will speed up germination time when the warmer weather returns.

Once the seed pops out of the ground we will need two more ingredients. Sun and fertilizer. The longer days will assist with more sun to produce photosynthesis. Small amounts of fertilizer are important to develop roots and strengthen shoots.

Keeping traffic away is very important too. All carts and foot traffic should avoid these areas. In a normal spring, we could have these areas back to normal by the end of May.
