Research - Japanese Beetles

This year we are working with independent turf researcher, Adam Van Dyke out of Logan, Utah on Japanese Beetle trials.

We are experimenting with numerous preventative and curative insecticides to see what products work the best.

Back in May we applied preventative products to a plot south of the 9th tee on the Pfluger course.

A couple of weeks ago he returned to Pinehurst to apply some curative products that are active on the grub itself.

This time we chose a spot south of the 1st fairway on the Pfluger course.

Some products are granular and some are liquid. You can see here Adam is applying a product with a small sprayer.

All of the products were irrigated into the turf to allow the product to enter the root zone where it needs to be active.

We did some scouting to find an area where we could perform the curative trials. This area was not applied with our products for the year so we could have a clean area for trials.

We also scouted our control plots from the preventative application.

We did see grubs which is a good sign that we picked a good location.

Grubs don't move very far in the soil. Adam will return next month to analyze both trials and determine results after one year.
