Adult Season

It is adults only for Japanese Beetles. Those pesky beetles that love your roses and linden trees are here for the next few weeks. There is not much for successful treatments at this stage in the way of pesticides. Many products will cause injury to beneficial insects in the same area.

We have done a lot of successful hand picking over the past four seasons. This year we are going to experiment with a new product called beetleGONE.  We will try this on a few plants around the clubhouse and monitor the results. If you use this product, make sure you read the label and follow accordingly.

Even though you see many of the adults on the grass, they are usually mating and are harmless to the turf at this time. The adults are harmful to certain flowering shrubs and trees over the next few weeks. The grub stage is harmful to the turf. The larvae, especially the young larvae eat like teenage boys. When we see approximately 10 grubs per square foot we know it is time to treat because the turf will  struggle with severed roots.

By now, if you manage a lawn near the club or see a large population of insects near your home, you need to be managing your Japanese Beetle populations every year. In time we should see less and less beetles each year.
