Course Update

The crew put in a couple of long days to make sure greens and approaches were aerified and topdressed ahead of the snow. There is plenty to complete before opening, we'll see what comes of the storm.

Moisture is wonderful and certainly appreciated by the turf. The cold overnight temperatures will slow growth.

Last night we covered the new putting green again considering the forecast. Soil temperatures on the green have been on the increase recently and we want to maintain those temps as much as possible. The cover will help insulate the soil so our growth does not slow as much as the rest of the property. This week, we began lowering the height of cut on the green, so maintaining growth is critical.

We continue to push lateral growth on the green and increase density. The few bare spots are filling in nicely. The cover will assist with those efforts. We expect to have the cover on into the weekend and it will be removed when the temperatures rise again.

I do not recommend fertilizing this time of year as soil temperatures are not high enough for consistent growth or even the need for mowing. But areas that were under cover this winter are further ahead and are seeing plenty of growth. We have mowed the green surrounds on the new project areas three times this spring so they are hungry for more food.

One of the many products we will use for young plants is Ammonium Sulfate (21-0-0) to push growth to achieve maturity. We apply low rates on a weekly basis to keep the feeding the plant for continued growth. Other products such as Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sea Kelp and other minor nutrients are important for turf development.
