Winter Water - Again

It is that time of year again in Denver to break out the winter watering to battle another warming trend.  We have a 1,000 gallon tanker that we use to get water in hard to reach places. Today we will start up our mainline once again and begin hadn't watering around greens.

The goal for watering this time of year is to wet the crown of the plant. Since the ground is frozen it is difficult to achieve deep watering. Dry conditions coupled with traffic stress from golfers wear on surface shoots and crowns which can lead to their demise if they become too dry.
It is critical that we monitor moisture levels and apply water where needed. Fortunately, that new winter hydrant on the driving range was installed with the project this year. It will provide water to the practice tee and the new putting green.

Historically for Denver, the last two weeks of the year are the coldest of the year. The forecast doesn't look to be shaping up that way.

As for snowpack and the outlook for 2019, things are looking up. Here is the most up to date SNOTEL map. We never saw these totals last year.

On other positive note our main reservoir, Harriman is full and ready for next season. With the colder temperatures this fall our need for irrigation water decreased sooner than normal and we were able to send more of Bear Creek water to fill the reservoirs. We may lose some water to evaporation through the winter, but it shouldn't take long to top it off once again in the spring.
