Irrigation Pump Maintenance

On Monday we had two of our three irrigation pumps pulled out for rebuilding. They are 15 years old and each pump has pushed approximately 530 million gallons of water in that time. It is time to have a look over the pumps and replace any worn parts. The pumps are due back in January to be ready for the new irrigation season.

Sponge covers the pump shafts which causes the pumps to work harder. Multiple times per year we put bleach into the well to treat the sponge. It may never completely eradicate the sponge but we keep it to a manageable level. Freshwater sponge is an organism that lives throughout our irrigation system. It is becoming a common issue throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Occasionally we have found sponge clogging filters inside smaller irrigation heads and require cleaning.
