Photos like these are not limited to Pinehurst. In fact I feel our population is healthier than most areas of town. Most trees that look like this are not new to stress. They have limped along through the past few dry winters.
Through the winter and spring we have been deep watering around these trees. Aerifying also helps with getting water into the root zone. Some light pruning can help but over pruning can tip stressed trees over the edge as they require energy to recover from cuts.
We will continue to monitor these trees and hope for a successful rebound.
