A-Week

Course aerification is upon us. This is the most critical week of the year as we prepare all short grass areas for the new golf season.

As a reminder, aerification allows us to incorporate sand into the native soil profile and encourage gas exchange (soils need to breathe too).

Sand is used for "performance grass" as it doesn't compact like clay soils, it allows for better drainage and firmer playing conditions. Roots can grow freely in sandy soils. Sand topdressing also keeps the surface smooth and it helps dilute accumulating organic matter in the profile.

After almost 60 years of topdressing greens here at Pinehurst, the immediate soil profile is one I would not trade. The challenge is maintaining great conditions. We also apply organic fertilizers, humates and Calcium during aerification to "feed the soil" for plants and microbes to feed on during the season.

Two years ago we made the switch to close the golf courses completely for aerification. This allows the grounds staff to achieve our goals without preparing for golfers as well. This way, when the golf course re-opens, aerification is complete and you do not have to play around our mess. Successful playing conditions each year hinge on aerification week.

I also wanted to share a quick video that you may have seen on the Golf Channel recently.
