2015 Tree Action Plan: Pruning

The new fallen snow will keep the course closed for another few days. The trees will certainly benefit from the moisture.

Another critical part to tree maintenance is pruning. Proper trimming on trees has many benefits to the long term health of a tree.

Advantages of Pruning:
1. removes dead branches, especially those that can pose a safety threat.
2. encourages new growth
3. relieves weight on main leaders
4. opens sunlight paths for existing and new growth
5. maintains the shape of the tree
6. keeps the energy in the plant focused on healthy branches

As you can see in these pictures, here we have our most prized tree on the property, the cottonwood tree on the right side of 18 fairway.

The top picture was taken before pruning.  We had an arborist observe the tree recently and it was recommended to do some healthy pruning, especially on the tee side of the tree. There was a lot of excessive growth that was weighing down heavily on that side of the tree. Our tree company estimated that they relieved that side of the tree by 5,000 lbs.

The winter is the best time of the year for pruning. Without leaves, you can really observe the anatomy of the tree. You can understand its growth patterns. The bottom photo is the final product. You can notice a cleaner look to the tree.
