Parking Lot Update

The parking lot project has been put on hold until spring due to the cold weather. The weather pro-longs the curing process for concrete and delays opening up for use. The last pour was completed last week and we plan to open the drive lanes over the next few days depending on weather. The Bogies entrance should be used for all handicap access. Please obey all signs and coned off areas so that our new concrete can have the proper time to cure.

There are a few new management techniques that we will begin this winter with the new concrete.

The first big change is that you will not see ice melt used on or near the concrete. We will be using traction sand for stubborn ice on stairways and walkways. Sand will help with gripping and can be reused through the winter months. Also, the sand has no negative effects to the surrounding landscapes. Concrete is most sensitive to ice melt within the first two years.

The problem with ice melt is that salt is a penetrant and seeps into the concrete. It can bring moisture with it during freeze/thaw cycles. When the moisture freezes in the concrete it can pop off the finish, leaving a speckled look. This lessens the life of concrete.

Another new addition to our snow removal process is switching our metal blade on the plows to rubber. The rubber is easier on the concrete and absorbs impacts when the blade contacts the concrete and curbing. It is also quieter and does just as good of a job.
