Living Golf

Nature is amazing.  All of these photos were taken this past week. But these are daily occurrences here at Pinehurst. The golf course is a Sanctuary to many, many walks of life. Sure there are unwanted friends such as Canada Goose and the stray coyote, but the rest of the list may amaze you. Pinehurst bodes red tail hawks, osprey, golden eagle, owl and numerous smaller birds. The fish and riparian life at the club include trout, bass, minnows, blue gill, grass carp, frogs, garter snakes and turtles.

We have bees, lots of bees. Walk by the wildflowers on the Pfluger or any of our many, many landscape beds around the club and you can't miss them. Pinehurst is now the home to seven maintained bee hives. They are crucial to plant and human life. Pinehurst also boasts a children's garden, two herb gardens, two wildflower patches and numerous fruit bearing apple trees. It should be a great year for apples!

We have over 40 species of trees on the property and countless other bushes and shrubs. The rolling hills off the beaten path of the course now covered in tall waving fescues and wheat grasses are home to insect population such as butterflies, mantis, leafhoppers and crickets. Pinehurst and the surrounding neighborhoods are home to rabbit, skunks and raccoon. We keep after the voles, muskrats and those pesky geese too.

Some rather focus on the use of pesticides. Of course we use them, but in a highly responsible way. We first use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is the use all of the cultural practices available to prevent chemical applications. Then if pesticides are needed, they are used methodically. We are licensed and trained, only using the best products in the right application. It is important to fight noxious weeds to protect our water and plant life. Timely fungicide applications are used to maintain top golf course conditions. Insecticides are used to maintain our healthy tree population.

Golf courses are some of the best water managers around. The club has invested millions of dollars into irrigation and drainage on the property. Using the latest technology and efficiently applying water only to where it is needed is our priority. You'll never find irrigation cycles turning on during a rain storm at Pinehurst.

Nature happens everyday here at your club. Enjoy.
