Stumbling Through Spring

We are stumbling through spring in regards to temperatures. We are seeing overnight soil temperatures continue to dip down into the 30's and 40's which is normal this time of year. Day time soil temperatures are getting up to the 50's. Some snow and some sun creates fluctuations below our feet.
Plant growth begins with consistent temps in the mid-50's or greater to begin growth. Microbes get going in the soil and root systems begin to spur new growth. The recent snowfalls have been great with moisture, but the cold temperatures are slowing growth.

This week we applied a pigment to greens that helps darken them to attract more sun and heat up soil temperatures. This product also boosts the plants immune system to help fight any disease pressure while trying to heal up from aerification.

On another note with spring temperatures in Colorado, slow springs are always healthy. Extreme warm and windy days can increase snow melt which can lead to flooding and rapid run off to precious snow pack. After last fall, I am not sure how much more flooding areas of the state can handle.

One of the nice benefits to spring is the emergence of spring flowers. Many fruit trees and tulips on the property are just getting going and they will be peaking over the next couple of weeks. It is certainly a great time to enjoy this part of year. After winter, it is common to want to yearn for warm days, but we have a lot of great summer days to look forward to out here at Pinehurst.
