Root Pruning

Tree roots can be invasive to greens, tees and fairways. They impede on turf health by competing for water and nutrients. They can also become a hazard to the golfer.

The first picture is located at 11 green where the roots are competing with the front portion of the green.
A trencher is used to cut 10 inches deep to severe roots. We choose locations in the rough but outside the drip line away from the critical roots.

The worst areas were on the Pfluger with multiple cottonwood roots growing into fairways 2, 5, 6 & 9. Other areas on the Maxwell include 1 & 13 tees, 8, 11, & 16 greens.

This practice has a minimal impact to the tree. Once the trench is cut we use tar paper and rock to fill the trench. This method prevents the roots from  encroaching the area in the future.

In areas where the sod was salvageable, it was returned to the original location. Some areas the turf was weak so it will be seeded and grown-in during the spring.

In the meantime, please play around these locations.
