Needle Scale

It is important to watch your pines each year for needle scale. Some of our Scotch Pines are riddled with Striped Brown Tortoise. These insects are common on the Front Range as they begin to feed on the plant and suck out nutrients from the tree. The insects are in their crawling and hatching stage for new insects and are most susceptible to an insecticide application. The application to the Scotch Pines was made on Monday.

Each year we will monitor the trees to keep the insects at bay. Here is a great article that goes more in depth from Whitney Cranshaw at Colorado State University.
