Fairy Ring

Fairy Ring is a fungus that releases excessive nitrogen from organic matter build up in the soil. The high nitrogen combined with high heat is too much for turfgrass to survive. This showed up recently right in the middle of the 16th fairway.

As you can see below the basidiomycetes (fungus) in the soil are plentiful. In high profile areas we excavate 12" deep and remove the infected soil.

Then we replaced it with a clean sandy soil which will increase drainage and maintain a firm surface. Plywood is used to prevent rutting from equipment moving in and out of the area.

The grain on this sod will work it way out in time after consistent mowing. Other ways to maintain fairy ring is to apply preventative fungicides. This practice is used on putting surfaces to maintain consistencies in putting performance. Other ways to reduce the damage of this disease is to spike or aerify deeply and drench the soil with water. This will help move the fungus deeper into the soil.
