11 Cottonwood

Last week during a high wind storm this cottonwood on 11 fairway gave way and blew over. The 50 plus mph gusts were too much and it snapped right at the base.

This season we stopped mowing fairway height grass around the tree to prevent any further damage to the the root system, but Mother Nature finally got the best of the tree.

Cottonwoods are not the greatest trees in golf. As we witnessed early this winter on #7, the tree became too large, too dangerous and it is a hindrance on golf course conditioning and playability. Striking a golf ball near the root system of a cottonwood can be very dangerous. Contacting a root with a club can do damage to wrists and arms. The root system can also wreak havoc on mowers and vise versa.

We are at the point of the season where it is too hot and stressful to risk planting a tree. Instead we will consult on the better timing, tree species and location for planting in the future.
