Soil Conditions

Here is the latest information from our soil sensor on the 7th green. Each sensor has an upper (green) sensor and a lower (orange) sensor. The upper sensor is about 2-3 inches below the surface and the lower sensor is another 3 inches lower.

As far as the moisture in the green, prior to the last snowfall on January 11th the green was watered to keep the crowns of the plants moist. You do not see a change in the lower sensor because the soil is frozen and moisture is unable to penetrate that deep.

Temperature is no surprise as we are enduring quite the cold spell. You will notice the most change in the upper sensor since it is closer to the atmosphere.

This is a great tool we can use to monitor soil conditions through the winter and especially during the growing season. We can determine how much water is necessary to apply to the turf. It is common in arid climates for turf managers to over water turfgrass. These sensors provide data to assist superintendents on making better water management decisions.
