Today marks the end of the tournament season at the club as the Pinehurst Cup concludes today. Beginning Monday we will start preparing the golf course for the winter months and the next golf season. We will be focusing on greens and tees on all holes this week.
The aerifier pictured here will be used on tee surfaces. This fall we will be using solid tines which do not pull a core. It provides small holes to break up surface tension, relieve compaction and allow oxygen into the root zone. Following aerification soil amendments and seed will be applied. We have a new form of soluble calcium, a 50/50 blend of sand and compost and perennial ryegrass seed. Ryegrass quickly germinates and is a great playing surface for tee boxes.
Greens will get another topdress tomorrow as well. We will groom the surfaces and add another light topdress of sand.
Two other projects we are focusing on are irrigation upgrades and correcting collar dams. This week we are focusing on holes 6 & 10 on the Maxwell Course. We saw a lot of success this year on greens 1,13,16 after fixing those dams last spring. The collar dam that needs attention this week is Maxwell 4 green. This is one of the worst on the property. The 4th green is historically our slowest green and we have recorded higher moisture readings in this green all season. The dam at the front of the green creates a "fishbowl" effect on the green and reduces playability and performance. Tune into the blog tomorrow for more on the progress of this green. Worst case scenario we will require a temporary green for #4 on Tuesday to complete this project.
