Fall Aerification

Today we began aerifying greens on the Pfluger Course. Above is a quick video of a new attachment that we borrowed to assist with clean up. I was thoroughly impressed with the simplicity and effectiveness of this unit. It reduces the amount of tire ruts that we normally experience during the clean up process. It also leaves behind some of the good sand from the cores and removes the organic matter nicely.

This is not necessarily the most popular time of the year on the golf course, but it is highly important to the success of the putting surfaces in the future. Aerification removes thatch build up and allows oxygen, water and nutrients into the soil profile. Heavy sand topdressing is important to dilute thatch, smooth the surface and promote new growth.

Soil temperatures remain high and recovery should be quick. We also feed the soil with fertilizers that include nitrogen, potassium and calcium. Tuesday we finish up with the Maxwell Course. The weather was almost perfect for aerification today.
