Water Restrictions; Part 1

Drastic cuts are beginning this week to irrigation water on the golf course. Summer has officially begun and water availability to Pinehurst CC is at a premium.

Over the past week, we have been limping along the entire property to keep it green. Four days of 100+ temperatures combined with the wind, we are starting to lose the battle. The forecast doesn't look favorable.

In order to win the fight, some difficult changes need to occur. We could easily use 1 million gallons per night to keep up with Mother Nature. Unfortunately, we only have 650,000 gallons available per night. At this pace, our focus turns to maintaining the short grass on the golf courses and the immediate club grounds to keep them healthy. Beginning this week on the golf course will be only irrigating greens, tees, fairways, approaches and their immediate surroundings. The staff is working extremely hard to put water in the right place and make the most of this precious resource.

The roughs will quickly begin to turn brown and slip into dormancy. In some locations the plants may not survive. As the entire Rocky Mountain region is suffering from extreme drought conditions, our goal is to keep our best features on the golf course in top notch shape.

As the remainder of the season continues on, we will evaluate our locations that are no longer receiving water and develop a plan to return these areas back to normal as quickly as possible.

Watch for the next post for preferred changes for golfer management on the course.
