The Norgren Cup is here. The first major tournament of the season kicks off today with a practice round. The course is firming up for the weekend. Playing conditions are excellent.

Vaille Lake Proposed Improvements

Waterways Design: Vaille Lake: There are numerous improvements in this area of #2 Green and #3 Tee that include golf design, bank stabilization and outlet flow. In the early 2000’s the City of Denver expanded Quincy Ave and the club was forced to move the 2 nd green. Due to the limited space and elevation change a wall was installed along the pond that still stands today. Storm flows make the largest impact to Vaille Lake as they enter the club at the 2 nd green. We continue to see significant erosion on these banks that deteriorate our shoreline and affect golf features and infrastructure. Muller Engineering is carefully balancing hydraulics of storm flows, permitting & regulations while not interfering with the golf design. The plan moving forward to remove the wall and gain more shoreline to return the slope to the front of that green. The green construction will be done following this work with Muller. Norgren Lake & #5 Improvements

Norgren Lake (pond between 4 & 6) is the most critical area for improvement on the property. We will see changes that include a new dam, expanded lake and bank stabilization. On the west end of the lake we will expand to balance the amount of surface water lost from Vaille Lake. We need to maintain the same amount of surface area from pre to post construction. For golfers this will threaten tee shots on 6 that move left. The dam to the south end of the lake is clearly the most important area for improvement. Norgren Lake is our largest lake and our irrigation supply is pumped from this body of water. We have a tree lined earthen dam and the outlet goes through the middle of the dam. There is some significant erosion on both sides of the dam that is very concerning. Any compromise to this dam will hinder us from irrigating the 225 acres of the property. New Creek Vaille to Midway Lake

When the golf course was built, Vaille, Midway and Norgren Lakes were connected by storm pipes. There were no creeks connecting them. Over time, as the neighborhood was developed and more impermeable landscapes were installed, the amount of storm water that entered the club grew. After 30 years or so, those storm pipes began to fail and caused drainage issues on the 4 th hole. In the year 2000, the old storm pipe was abandoned connecting Vaille & Midway lake and the creek was constructed. Numerous storm flows later we are left with what we see today. Today’s creek was not constructed to handle the storm flows of today. Lots of sediment has moved into Midway Lake and the creek is at a much lower elevation than it was originally constructed. Exposed today are many old drain and irrigation parts as well as a 60” Denver Water mainline exposed. We have lost numerous sprinkler heads along most of our shoreline and creek banks.
