The Norgren Cup is here. The first major tournament of the season kicks off today with a practice round. The course is firming up for the weekend. Playing conditions are excellent.

Collar Dams

It is common for older golf courses to develop collar dams. After years of heavy topdressing much of the sand tends to accumulate on the perimeter of the green thus creating a "dam". Some greens are more noticeable than others. These dams prevent water exiting the surface. A build up of moisture on the green leads to a number of problems such as, increased poa annua populations, anaerobic soils, thin turf conditions, increased disease potential and soggy, soft greens. When Press Maxwell built these greens in the late 1950's, surface drainage was a main factor to construction. At that time sand was not used to construct putting greens. Native soils were used and in our case it was clay. USGA green construction specifications were in the infant stages at the time, however sand topdressing after construction has been common practice for many years. Norgren Lake & #5 Improvements

Norgren Lake (pond between 4 & 6) is the most critical area for improvement on the property. We will see changes that include a new dam, expanded lake and bank stabilization. On the west end of the lake we will expand to balance the amount of surface water lost from Vaille Lake. We need to maintain the same amount of surface area from pre to post construction. For golfers this will threaten tee shots on 6 that move left. The dam to the south end of the lake is clearly the most important area for improvement. Norgren Lake is our largest lake and our irrigation supply is pumped from this body of water. We have a tree lined earthen dam and the outlet goes through the middle of the dam. There is some significant erosion on both sides of the dam that is very concerning. Any compromise to this dam will hinder us from irrigating the 225 acres of the property. Myth #4: Yesterday vs. Tomorrow The care of a golf course and design should be major factors in joining a golf club. Fortunately, Pinehurst has both, which is why we are all here. You have probably heard me say how the golf course has evolved over time. Things change due to weather, play, maintenance practices and green committees. Certainly, the game has evolved too with technology, maintenance equipment and the climate. The last major architecture change to the club was the rebuilding of bunkers in 2000. Shortly after that the 2 nd green on the Maxwell changed as well. Since then, greens, tees, fairways have grown tired. Some see the Urbina plan as turning the property back into what it was like in 1960 when the course opened for play. For some clubs, this might be a good thing. But this is not true for Pinehurst. Urbina’s plan is a reimagining of what Press Maxwell originally presented in the 60’s. As the game has changed so should the design...
