In The Heart of Denver

More snow.
Bummer.
But how ‘bout them Broncos! You have to admit, they have been impressive. What’s more impressive is that patch of beautiful green grass in the heart of Denver in early January.
Here are some similarities and differences between sports fields and golf courses.
The field at Mile High is comprised of blended Kentucky Bluegrass varieties. Similar to Pinehurst, you will find these varieties in the roughs,
tees and fairways. Bluegrass is a creeping plant that is very dense and is able to handle wear stress fairly well. The soil at the field is a sand based profile that allows for better water percolation and deep rooting. They continue to add to that sand profile by topdressing regularly. Pinehurst has an older native soil profile, but like Mile High, our sand topdressing practices are just as important to amend the soil for better plant health.
Here are a few additional features to the field at Mile High. The field has more than 20 million synthetic fibers sewn into the turf to enhance durability of the surface. This prevents divots from spikes throughout the game. Mile High is also equipped with an underground warm water heating system that is used to keep the field from freezing. (Too bad golf can't be played inside a football field or we would be playing today!) This allows the plants to stay green and prevent the plant from hardening off and turning brown like the old stadium field. Sports Authority Field also has a state-of-the-art drainage system that allows the field to handle up to 5 inches of rainfall per hour without interrupting the playing surface.
