Topdressing Greens

Sand topdressing greens occurred today on the Maxwell greens. Light and frequent (every two weeks) applications through the growing season helps to maintain smooth surfaces. The sand helps fill in ball mark blemishes. The sand also incorporates into the soil profile which promotes water and nutrient infiltration. A sandy soil profile allows more pore spaces for root growth. Maybe the most important aspect of sanding the greens regularly is to dilute the amount of thatch and organic matter build up in the green. Increased amounts of thatch create a soft surface which can create an unhealthy environment for plant growth.
After a light dressing of the surface, we use a heavy drag mat to work the sand into the turf canopy.
Following the drag mat, we use rollers to assist with putting the sand into the canopy and creating a smoother surface for the day. Tonight we will irrigate the green heavily to wash the sand deeper into the soil. Tomorrow calls for another roll on the greens followed by sweeping and mowing on Thursday.
The Pfluger greens will be topdressed tomorrow with the same process.
