Winter Weather

It is the middle of February and we are starting to green up some. We have had 29 days without any measurable moisture on the golf course so we started our irrigation system for the golf courses. We are certainly nowhere near mowing grass and we are not pushing a lot of water right now, it is still the heart of winter. Winter watering requires light watering to keep the crown of the turfgrass plant moist and alive. Soil moisture is still pretty good right now so we do not need to water deep into the profile.

I heard a few people recently talk about fertilizing soon. Do Not Do This, you are only wasting money and time. In order for fertilizer to be effective the soil temperatures must be consistently in the 50's. This usually begins around April or after your first or second mow. Currently our soil temperatures are in the 30's and 40's.

For anyone who has been around Denver long enough certainly knows that winter is not over. We are still due for a few more snow falls and colder temperatures. By over-watering and trying to wake plants up from dormancy can cause trouble. When trees and plants are out of dormancy they can become more susceptible to winter injury from those late winter or spring storms.

It is nice to enjoy those warm February days outside, but be mindful that spring and summer is still many weeks away.
